Graves Gladney

From the Weird Strange Archive

Charles Graves Gladney was an American illustrator, painter, and fine artist who studied under Frank Vincent DuMond at the Art Students League of New York.

During the late 1930s and early 1940s, Gladney was one of Street & Smith’s primary cover illustrators, painting dozens of dynamic covers for Astounding Science-Fiction, The Shadow, and Unknown.

Gladney was known for his grounded anatomical realism, dramatic chiaroscuro, and bold, modern use of stark lighting contrasts.
