Marchocias
From the Weird Strange Archive
This illustration depicts the demon Marchocias (or Marchosias), a Great Marquis of Hell, from the 1863 edition of Jacques Collin de Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal:
Subject & Anatomy: Marchocias is rendered as a predatory, hybrid beast—bearing the body, ferocious snout, and paws of a she-wolf, paired with large feathered griffin wings and a long serpent's tail curled into an upright spiral.
Action & Pose: Posed in an active, leaping crouch against a minimalist mountainous landscape, the demon belches a tall plume of fire from its open maw.
Artist & Engraver: Illustrated by French draughtsman and marine painter Louis Le Breton (signed "L.B." in the lower left) and cut into wood by engraver M. Jarrault (signed "JARRAULT" in the lower right).
Demonic Lore: Drawing on classical demonological treatises such as Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum and the Ars Goetia, Marchocias is described as a fierce and reliable warrior spirit who commands thirty legions, obeys summoners faithfully, and harbored hope of returning to the Seventh Throne after twelve hundred years.
