Fantastic Adventures
From the Weird Strange Archive
Fantastic Adventures was an American fantasy and science fiction pulp magazine published by Ziff-Davis Publishing Company from 1939 to 1953. Created as a companion title to Amazing Stories, the magazine focused heavily on fast-paced adventure, sword-and-sorcery, and whimsical or humorous fantasy.
Publishing History
Editorial Leadership: Launched in May 1939 under the editorship of Raymond A. Palmer, the magazine positioned itself against more technical hard sci-fi competitors by championing accessible, colorful space operas and mythical adventures.
Format & Visuals: Published primarily in standard pulp format (later briefly transitioning to digest size), Fantastic Adventures was renowned for its lavish back-cover art features and rich color cover illustrations by artists such as J. Allen St. John, Frank R. Paul, Robert Gibson Jones, and Walter Popp.
Public Domain Status: Under the U.S. Copyright Act of 1909, Ziff-Davis failed to file 28-year copyright renewals for issues from this era (including July 1942), placing the composite magazine issues and unrenewed interior artwork into the public domain.
